Speaker 1:

Hello, peace be upon you wherever you are on this planet. Welcome back to a new episode of In Peace, where we come together to listen, to reflect, to heal and to grow. And I'm very excited today to introduce you to a very special guest in our episode of In Peace, who's Abdiya Medings. Abdiya is a retreat, a safe space for Muslim women to come together, called Sisters Gateway. Abdiya was born in an English revert family. She moved to Spain 11 years ago. She's a businesswoman, an entrepreneur, a mother, doing all this all at once Just a great role model to anybody. So welcome, abdi. Pleasure to have you today, and I wanted to start with asking you about Sisters Getaway. How did the idea of Sisters Getaway, where did it come from? How did it start? So about, tell us about the journey of creating this amazing a safe space for muslim women to come together, create an amazing community everyone, thank you so much for having me on this very special podcast.

Speaker 2:

Um, well, it all began. I mean, like I, like you mentioned, I moved to Spain 11 years ago and I lived in Granada, um, which is in southern Spain, in Andalusia, and it's such a beautiful city. I mean, if anyone's been there, you know it's such a beautiful city and it has, you know, and you know, I really I didn't even know until I was probably maybe 13 or 14 that there were European Muslims that lived and ruled in Spain for over 800 years, which is just mind-blowing. You know, like, growing up from revert parents, you feel like you're so new, it's all so new, you know, but actually just almost like a throne, stay away. There were Muslims ruling in southern Spain and all the way up to some parts of France. So I thought, you know, when I moved there and I started to learn more, I was like, wow, this is such a special place. You know, I feel very privileged to be living here and learning more about the history and just being within this, this beautiful city, and my two sisters, two of my older sisters I've got more sisters um, are therapists and I always just dream about hosting a retreat, you know, with them because I could bring the beautiful space I've got. Like you know, I started to get the contacts and I thought like, wow, wouldn't it just be so beautiful to bring women together who I love, um, and have a wonderful time, eat good food and, you know, enjoy the scenery and, you know, and have transformation, you know. So that was really something kind of on the back of my mind for some time and then it was back in August 2021.

Speaker 2:

Back in August 2021, I connected with a revert online called Ellie Quinn and she had just recently become Muslim in COVID and she was saying that, you know, she had a lot of people in her DM saying, you know, do you have any events? I'd love to meet new women, especially other people that had come with them recently. So other reverts, um, and we got talking one day and I thought now is the time. Now is the time to do this retreat that I'd always dreamed of. Like, let's run a retreat together, um, I've got all the contacts. Let's find a beautiful place in the mountains outside Granada. Let's do a retreat and do a city break at the end so we don't miss the Alhambra and the city tour and visit the masjid, like all the beautiful things of the city of granada, but I could combine it with being in the mountains, like the energy of the mountains. It's just so, so special.

Speaker 2:

So we launched a retreat very important word, a retreat. It was just going to be one, one retreat and I was going to be with my other other amazing. So I started with with just one retreat, one retreat, and so what all we did was we let our audiences know on Instagram. You know, I was doing kind of more like modest fashion. She's a travel blogger, so we told our audiences about it. We did a Facebook group, we we set up um, you know, zoom, so it went straight into the Facebook group. We did a live um zoom call and, uh, three days I had about 50 calls and in three days the retreat was full.

Speaker 2:

So just me and ellie was like what just happened? What just happened? Like so many people want this, you know, and want to come away in the middle of the mountains, um, and just be with each other. You know, do some yoga, have a massage, um, you know, go for some walks, do some creative writing, but like, essentially, just be with each other and make those connections, and so obviously so many people missed out on, because we just had 18 spaces, you know, and so we did another one. Okay, for the people that missed out, let's do another one.

Speaker 2:

Um, and then, by the time that sold out and we sold out, you know, six, seven months in advance I was like, oh, this is just really exciting, like I cannot wait to meet these ladies and spend time with them. So I continued adding dates, you know, basically just continued adding until, well, they kept filling up. So I just kept adding and adding. And Ellie, you know three step-sons um, she said, look, I can't, I can't continue with you, but like, I'll support you from from the sidelines, you know. So I said, okay, well, listen, I got my friends involved, my sisters involved, you know, to help me lead the retreats. Um, and they just continued, you know. And then, um, yeah, that's, that's really how it all the thing okay, perfect, great, okay.

Speaker 1:

that's an amazing story of the uh, I love it and it's just. It just shows how important, when you feel there is a call and you really want to do something, not to overthink it too much and just get started. And this is exactly from what you said. This is exactly what you did and, mashallah, it got the ball going and it made it like a whole sister's getaway now from just one retreat, and that's amazing, mashallah. So how do you manage being an entrepreneur and a mother, a wife, a fat, having family and dealing with all, with everything, uh, with with the reality of having a business and deal with it? So how do you balance all this?

Speaker 2:

so, yeah, like the name mentioned, like I'm a mother, and you must think like, okay, so when did you have a baby amongst all the last three years? So, um, literally, like, our first retreat was in June 2022. The second retreat was in July. We had two retreats in in August and then two in September, two in October and somewhere in August I got pregnant. Um, so I was running, I did six retreats in my first trimester, two of them, none the wiser um and uh, and so I suddenly, you know, was going into 2023, um, not being able to run the retreats, but I hadn't, sort of, you know, made preparations for that. Um, I, I didn't, although you know we were, we were really, really hoping to start a family, like I didn't think that far ahead, you know, um, and so I was like, okay, now I really need to start, like training leaders, and I'm the type of person and you know people listening to this might be like, yep, I can relate to that. I like to do things myself, I like to see them being done how I like them, especially when it's something that's so, like special to me, and I want to make sure that they are, that everything's executed like exactly how I want to. You know how I would myself. So now I'm starting to train leaders who've maybe never run retreats before to continue the retreats on my behalf, because I physically cannot be there.

Speaker 2:

And then the next retreat was in April, which was just two weeks before my due date, um, and so it was very intense because I was getting bigger and bigger, I was having more and more zoom calls with the leaders and also I was continuing to, you know, market the retreats, um, you know, do the onboarding, speaking to people, um, I also kept my pregnancy private online. So it was, like, you know, managing all of this, um, kind of kind of. You know, my face was getting more and more swollen but I was like, you know, just continue, continue, continue. I worked right up until the night, but I went into labor, um, so I really couldn't let go very, very easily, um, but how do I manage it all? So I've had very wonderful support. So, for the first year, um, my sister-in-law looked after my little girl for like five hours every morning, like getting all done, um, and then, you know, now she's in nursery, which, you know, I'm sure so many mothers can relate, like mum guiltcom.

Speaker 2:

Wow, it's intense, um, but I think, you know, for my, my passions and my business, to be able to continue, um, I need that time, you know, and, like, I've been so lucky with, with the, with the nursery and you know all of those, the opportunities that Allah has given me, um, but I'd say, um, I don't really manage. I'm not very good at like organizing myself, um, and it is, you know, really kind of just like, as much as I can, anytime I can, I'm just trying to work towards this project. You know, um, and it's it's been 2023, 2024 has been like, it's been like, okay, like can I continue doing this? But I'm so, so grateful that Allah has continued to give me. You know, he's sent me the most wonderful leaders, most wonderful participants. I'm so grateful that it is continuing and I just always remind people that, like, every single person that signs up is helping us continue. You know, um, so you're not only coming on a retreat yourself, but you're actually facilitating someone else's retreat too yeah, definitely, mashallah.

Speaker 1:

That's amazing, um. I love how you kept determined of keeping it going and I can see the reason for that is that you had a big why it wasn't. It wasn't all about abdiya, it was for the bigger good for the community. And they loved how you also ended it, how, like the participants, don't just come, you know and and take all the benefits, the beautiful healing benefits, of the retreat, but they also support this amazing business to keep going and allow it to stay forever, and this is what we really need.

Speaker 1:

So, focusing on that, the intentions, and that I believe I'm a big believer of the power of intentions through, alhamdulillah, like learning that from our beautiful Islamic teachings and through what psychology also tells us. So, intention, I'm sure your beautiful intentions and made this keep going despite all the challenges that you've been through, and kept you strong and determined to keep it going. So, and how do you manage the intentions of the others? Because sometimes, um, of course, this is open to everybody. The target is muslim women, but I know it's open to other women who are curious to explore this experience with Muslim women, which is so beautiful, um, so how do you manage all these? You know the energies and intentions of those who are on board.

Speaker 2:

Uh, within the retreats, yeah, because that can be a big thing yeah, it definitely is, and I think you know when women are coming from such different parts.

Speaker 2:

You know times in their life or different parts of the world, like you know, have experienced different things, um, and you know, like you mentioned about intentions, like everyone comes with their intent, different intention. I try to you know, understand a little bit about why people want to join the retreats. You know how do they hear about sisters getaway was it through a friend that's been on? Sisters get you know on a retreat, um Instagram. Like what are they looking for? Like what do they want? You know, if you want a tour, it's not for you. Um, if you're looking for all inclusive holiday vacation at a resort, go for that. This isn't for you. You know this is for you.

Speaker 2:

If you want to come and meet like minded women who share your values, who are going to hold that safe space for you that you're going to feel looked after and you don't have to worry about anything, you can just really take the time to be, still to be to, to enjoy being in nature, um, to feel good in yourself, um, and I really, really encourage people to come with those types of intentions.

Speaker 2:

It might be that you haven't been on a break since becoming a mother or since finishing your degree or since you know your separation, or you know we had a wonderful, wonderful lady come on our very first retreat, her husband passed away, just you know, in COVID and this was her first trip away without him and, subhanallah, you know, her children were quite worried about her coming. You know, um and uh, she said I have not laughed this much. She laughed that she started to cry, you know, and it was so wonderful to see you know, and she, we thought, okay, let's be. You know, we're going to support her more. Like you know, it might be a bit challenging. She was the, the backbone of that retreat, like she supported everyone and like she was giving them a good advice and like you know it was, it was so wonderful, it was so, so wonderful amazing and uh.

Speaker 2:

So it really makes such a difference when people come with the right intentions.

Speaker 2:

Um, I often think that, well, I kind of remind myself that if someone comes and the first thing they say is, oh, it's a lot of money, like just to go to Spain and Morocco, like it's really expensive, like yeah, what do you want? And think like, is this for you? Because these types of experiences do come with us, they, they're not cheap. They aren't cheap. Um, I I just said to someone yesterday, like I can't even afford one of my retreats, you know um, so that kind of shows that I don't put them like um more expensive than than I have to. You know, um, things are just very expensive, you know, to have that exclusive space, to have you know all inclusive your meals, that and have two leaders and I think that was the other thing I really wanted to mention was that about you know the energies and the intentions, is that, you know it's it's very unique to have two sisters who are there to support you throughout the week yeah are dedicated.

Speaker 2:

You know they don't think about themselves for seven days. You know, like they, they are there to to make sure everything's running smoothly, to be a support for people.

Speaker 2:

Like you know, when you go away and you step away from your day-to-day, a lot of things come up for people, yeah of course, sometimes, you know, you can suddenly feel like you need to cry, or you need a hug, or you need to laugh, or you need to just go for a walk by yourself, like there's so much that comes up when we step away from our day-to-day, because when do we ever have time to think? You know, unless we take it, unless we make it a priority. Um, so you've got two kids there that are trained by Sisters Getaway, who are there dedicated to looking after you, to make sure everything is running smoothly and to be there for you, um, and it's an intense job, you know, like I did it that first year, every single retreat. You know, I did um in the October of 2022. I did a retreat from the 16th to the 21st, and then the 27th to the 20th, 22nd to the 27th. So I left one group one day and drove back down to the end didn't have a break, no break.

Speaker 2:

You know no break um, and some of my leaders still do that today. You know, if two, two retreat dates um, you know, very close together, like it's, then it goes back to back um, and so it's it's. It's very intense but it's very, very rewarding um you get so much from it.

Speaker 2:

Like people say, oh, you know, dear, thank you so much. I say no, thank you so much. You know, um, and it really means a lot to me when people, even though I'm not actually on the retreats, they can see the work that's going on behind the scenes. You know, on this last retreat at the end of October in Granada, um, you know they, they bought a beautiful picture for the two leaders, um and um, you know, shakur and Hanan, and they also sent one for me and they signed it and they wrote me and I just thought that was so special, you know, and I really, really appreciate it because I wish I could be there.

Speaker 2:

But I know it's my time, you know, because my little girl is so small, so I'm over there that you mentioned.

Speaker 1:

There's no such thing as as expensive when you're investing in yourself, um. So I really want to encourage everybody who's hearing us today love the sound of what Abdi is talking about. Never hesitate joining the retreats because of the cause, because, honestly, when you invest in yourself, you bring barakah to your whole life through the retreat itself. But then you'll notice the barakah even after going in that retreat. Especially with joining such a beautiful community, nonjudgmental, you'll find a lot about yourself. It's about digging deeper and this is also what you already touch into, abdiya, because sometimes we're very attached to our lives, our daily lives, with family, with work, with this, and that we're very detached from our own souls, our own selves. And, to be honest, this is the most precious. Knowledge is to get to. Knowledge is to get to know yourself more, to get to know yourself better, because the closer and the better you know yourself, the closer you become to Allah Azza wa Jal. So that is the last investment. It's not just an investment for this dunya, it's an investment for Akhirah. And from my own experience, abdi, you know that I was one of your um retreat attendees and, honestly, it was one of the most significant experiences I've ever had, and and it did so that one was in morocco and it was an amazing healing impact on my soul, on my physical body, on on everything really.

Speaker 1:

And there is an amazing thing about traveling that you don't get to experience if you never traveled, and this thing is you get to understand things that you never saw when you're, wherever you are in your daily lives.

Speaker 1:

And it also reminds me of the story of Musa and Al-Khadir and, subhanAllah, how Musa alayhi salam through his travel and he got to meet Al-Khadir, who made him understand so many things about himself. And I feel this is what Sisters Get Away can facilitate is getting the right people together, bringing them together to get them to understand something about themselves that they must understand to be able to continue this journey of life in a healthy, beautiful, full of faith and healing that I've never experienced anywhere else. So it's a very sacred thing and, mashaallah, it just shows because you have the right intentions and I'd love everybody to experience this through Sisters Getaway. So I know you already mentioned one case study of this lady who lost her husband and how Sisters Getaway made it so much easier for her to travel the first time by herself and experience the world and see things about herself like helping everybody through this and see things about herself like helping everybody through this. I wondered if you want to talk about another um other people, and how, what healing impact your retreats had on them.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I remember one lady it was back in August of 2022 as well. She came and, um, I didn't actually, you know, it wasn't like I actually spent. There was a it was a large group, it was to the UK, so it's just three nights, okay, upon last Friday to Monday, you think like what can happen in three nights, two days, like you know, all right, messaged a few, like I think it was like three weeks after the retreat, said I've quit my job, I've started my own business, and we were all like what, what? Like you know, you girls gave me the confidence. I was like subhanallah, like isn't that amazing?

Speaker 2:

Like it's and this is the thing, it's like you will meet people on the retreat that you will never meet anywhere else, even if you would have met them, like because of the environment, and like like the sort of backdrop of the retreat, like you know the fact that you're not meeting them on a train on the way to work. You're in a rush, stressed. Like you're meeting them in a space where you're relaxed, being looked after, you feel safe. You know so many people ask me like are they safe? I'm like you're so safe we don't even lock the doors. Like that is where those are the types of places that we reside in and um so many people. You know, like we've had a single single mums who, you know, until the last moment, they didn't even know whether, like, the father was going to show up and look after the child. Like they ended up working out for them and they felt, you know, everything was perfectly, you know, designed on the retreat for them. Like everything that they that we offered was like, was this designed especially for me? You know, we've had, you know, ladies who um from after the retreat. You know they've made such bonds. They went on on Omra together. You know they actually organized themselves.

Speaker 2:

We've had people go and stay in each other's houses on the sofa, you know, go and visit each other and I think, subhanallah, to meet people for just five, six, seven days and feel comfortable enough to then invite them into your home, I think it was really special Like that. You know there's people that I would trust with my child. You know, like the types of people that I've met on the retreats, I'm like, yeah, you're, you're good, you're good, you know, and I think that's, I think that's what's really, really changed people's lives. It's really changed people's lives because they've met people on the retreat that now they because so many women come on the retreat because they don't have travel buddies as well, you know, maybe their, their friends are or have young children, or they're recently married or they're studying or they're working they can't coincide their timetables and from the retreat they've met other women who are in a similar position to them, you know, and so now it's like now they've found travel buddies and I think that's really really cool.

Speaker 2:

Um, and it kind of you, it kind of brings new opportunities in your life, even if it's maybe another retreat together or another trip together. Or like you came in July 2023, your WhatsApp group is still there. No one's going to be dealing.

Speaker 1:

You can still we're still connected and I'd travel the world to see these beautiful friends because they're some of the closest to my heart.

Speaker 2:

So it's, it's beautiful and you can, you can count on each other. You know, and you know, especially like you know, like this year, past year, you know, when you wanted um support or to just share your experience, like you know, it's amazing like they showed up for you. You know, and I think that's um and like like, rightly so, but I think it's um testament to the intention that you came with and the person that you showed up. As for them, um, so yeah, mashallah.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, definitely, it's a very supportive community and, yeah, I shared my own experience of what's been going on in Gaza my own loss and yeah, they showed great support, including yourself, hafdia, and I'm grateful for that. Um, it's so beautiful. I know I'd love to talk about this forever with you, but I appreciate your time, um, so I'd love you have the year to tell us about the upcoming retreats that you're having. A, because I'm sure now people who are listening are thinking about this sounds great. I'd love to join what's happening, so if you let them know about the future retreats and how they can join and details on that, definitely so.

Speaker 2:

You know, as I mentioned, like back in 2022, like I got pregnant quite early on in the sisters getaway kind of journey, so I managed to scout one more location before I had Amelie, which was Morocco, which you, you came on um, and so I was very, very happy with my Granada, marrakesh locations, um, and since having my little girl, um, my sister has now scouted a beautiful new place in Zanzibar, um, so we're starting in January.

Speaker 2:

Um, we have four retreats next year. One of them still has spaces in July, so if you're interested in Zanzibar, please get in touch. Um, and it also comes with like an optional safari. So if you want to make it a once in a lifetime, you know, retreat plus safari like this is this is your time like. It's just so, so incredible. And um, inshallah, we also have um in the works, which I'm really happy about, and hopefully um kind of around this november next year we're going to be launching it, but we will launch it hopefully in the new year that's really exciting and we're going to really, you know, focus on um, the idea of the sahabiyat.

Speaker 2:

so you know, often like we hear so many stories about sahaba but like, not so much about the women. So I think it's going to be, it's going to be very, very special and we have amazing, amazing things in the pipeline for that. So, if you're interested in Amra, just send me a message on Instagram a Sisters Getaway official. Just write Amra and your name, your email and your number, and then you'll be the first to to know about that, because I already have a waiting list um as well.

Speaker 2:

So definitely get in touch and um, I'll make sure you're the first to know about it and, who knows, maybe some other locations um around the world. But we're very careful, but we really need to make sure it's the right space, the right retreat center, the right people. Um and um, you know, we don't just say, oh, here's a beautiful big house, let's use it. It's like, no, it's really important. The energy of the place and food and the people that run it, is it, you know, supporting the local economy? Is it, you know, ethical? All of those things are very, very important to us.

Speaker 1:

Um, so yeah and it all comes across. You know all these, consider all these ethics. It comes across throughout the retreat and I love that. Um I? Just one last question. So how do you pick these beautiful spaces? What inspires you to choose them? So you know yeah.

Speaker 2:

So I think, like, for example, when I found um, the retreat center in Granada like we looked at a lot of different retreat centers and it just felt right um, it just felt that energy felt right um, for the retreat center. But using Marrakesh again, like um and Nora will be testament to this because she was there with me when we went to look at it I just burst into tears. I was just like this place is special. I don't know what it is, but like I want to run my retreats here. It's very, very special and with Zanzibar as well, like a Muslim owned retreat centre is actually just finished, so we're going to be the first retreats that they're hosting wow, so it's brand new, brand new, and it's got access to the sea, um.

Speaker 2:

So your own access to the sea. You've got basically your own little like little um, you know, alcove in in the sea, so you, you know again, you could just go in there however you like. Um two private pools, and I think you know when we are using Muslim-owned spaces, they just get it. They just get it, they just understand. I like to use spaces that also believe in what I'm doing and see the benefit, for example, the place that I've been using in Granada up until now.

Speaker 2:

I feel like it's come to a point where, um, the fit is just not there anymore. We just don't. We don't fit anymore, you know, um, and that's when I knew I need to find a new place and the mashallah, allah, sent me this stunning new place that we're going to be using next year for our Granada retreats, and it's so. Now all my retreat centers are muslim owned, um 15 acres of land, fruit trees, um, and I've been really able to make it even more my own, um, and I love, how you reflected on on the space and the energy and how it doesn't resonate anymore.

Speaker 1:

It just shows how you're caring and how it all comes from the heart, and I agree it's amazing to find the right places which resonate with your own values. It's so precious and so important and this what makes Sisters Getaway so, so unique to any other retreat service. So I know I don't want to end it with you, abdiya. I'd love to keep talking, but I'm so, so grateful for your time, for your energy, for the love that you brought to this episode, love that you brought to this episode um and at the end, so, yeah, really big thank you for for coming and joining us today. Uh, but at the end I'd love to give you some space if you want to share any final thoughts or any final um message for our audience today yeah, I think you know a lot of the time people ask me, you know, like, is this for me?

Speaker 2:

you know, um I'm in my 50s, am I going to be the elder in the oldest person there, or? Um you know I would love to come but, um, you know, I feel nervous and I just think, like mashallah, like everyone's feeling pretty similar. Um, we have such a like a vast age range. On my retreats we've had from 16 to 78 um, everyone in between. So even if you happen to be the eldest on that retreat, you'll feel younger than you've ever felt.

Speaker 2:

Um, and I think you know we don't just um appeal to one type of audience in terms of ages or countries, like people come from all over the world and if you're in doubt, just come and speak to me. Like I have calls with everyone before they sign up. We have another call, you know, if you have any questions.
